We want to help you take the unknowns out of collecting your studs and breeding your females. Please feel free to contact Kristin if you have any additional questions not covered here.
- I want to have my dog frozen, what do I need to do first? You need your identification document ( registration papers, microchip, tattoo) and DNA number if required by registry and brucellosis test by your vet.
- What if my dog is not DNA registered? We carry AKC/UKC DNA kits for your use. NGA requires kits to be pre-purchased prior to collection. If your dog is registered with none of the above we will find out what the requirements are for your registry.
- How often can my dog be collected? We recommend a minimum of 3 days between collections for freezing semen.
- How many breeding units (vials) will I get per collection? It depends on the size, health, age and breed of your dog. Some dogs are unfreezable due to age issue, motility issues or morphology issues. There will be NO CHARGE if your dog cannot be frozen.
- What happens if you lose electricity? Will my semen thaw? No, the semen is stored in liquid nitrogen which requires no electricity.
- Can I use frozen semen on a maiden bitch? Absolutely.
- Does frozen semen require surgical implant? Absolutely not! Trans cervical insemination is as effective and does not require surgery or anesthesia. There is zero recovery time. Your bitch is wide awake and can go home immediately.
- How long does frozen semen stay viable? Indefinitely as long as it is stored properly in liquid nitrogen.
- How can I ship/receive frozen semen? Frozen semen is shipped in a vapor shipper. Some facilities require a deposit along with a charging fee. We only require the charging fee of $40. Owner is responsible for round trip shipping fees.
- Why can’t you do an AI with frozen semen? The lifespan of the thawed semen is less than 24 hours versus up to 5 days with fresh semen. Timing and placement are essential when using frozen semen. Bypassing the vaginal canal/vault and placing the semen directly into the uterus optimizes the semen’s ability to contact and fertilize eggs.
- How long will it take for my dog to be collected? We usually have teaser bitches available which usually minimizes time and maximizes the ejaculation. 10 minutes is usually adequate time for collection but expect to stay 30 minutes for paperwork. We charge no additional fee to process paperwork!
Interested in having a dog collected but he is 7 years old and only has one testicle. He has been bred twice and had healthy litters.Would his age and reproductive status, exclude him from being a candidate for collection?
